A Brazilian doctor has issued a serious warning about the risks of drinking too many fizzy drinks, especially Coca-Cola, after a shocking medical case went viral online.
Dr. Thales Andrade, a urologist, shared an Instagram video showing 35 stones he removed from a man’s bladder. The patient had been drinking three liters of Coca-Cola every day. The video has now been viewed over 8.5 million times.
In the video, Dr. Andrade explained that excessive sugary soda consumption can cause kidney stones, which are hard lumps made of calcium that form in the urinary tract. He showed several large yellow stones that were surgically taken out of the patient.

ToggleHow Do Kidney Stones Form?
Kidney stones develop when waste products in the blood form crystals, which can build up over time. Soda plays a major role in this process due to:
- High sugar content. This raises calcium levels in the body.
- Phosphoric acid in fizzy drinks. This creates an acidic environment in the kidneys, making it easier for stones to form.
Why It’s Dangerous
If not treated, kidney stones can move from the kidneys to the bladder and cause serious issues, such as:
- Sharp lower back pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Painful or bloody urination
- In severe cases, kidney failure or sepsis

Dr. Andrade stressed the importance of staying well-hydrated and limiting soda to protect kidney health. “Kidney health begins with the daily choices of what we drink,” he said.
Who’s at Risk?
According to the National Kidney Foundation:
- Kidney stones affect 1 in 10 people, mostly between ages 30 and 60.
- Small stones can often pass through urine on their own.
- Larger stones may need surgery to be removed, especially if they cause intense or prolonged pain.
Takeaway: Enjoy soda in moderation and prioritize water to protect your kidneys. Your daily drink choices really matter more than you think!
