In a remarkable story of loyalty and survival, a hiker in Switzerland was rescued from a glacier crevasse thanks to the quick thinking of his tiny dog, a long-haired chihuahua.

On July 4, the man was trekking across the Fee Glacier in southern Switzerland when disaster struck. As he crossed a fragile snow bridge, it suddenly gave way beneath him, sending him plummeting into a deep, narrow crevasse hidden beneath the icy surface. The hiker was alone except for his faithful canine companion.

Miraculously, the man had a walkie-talkie with him and managed to send out an emergency call. A nearby hiker received the distress signal but couldn’t locate the source. The vast, featureless expanse of the glacier made spotting the accident site incredibly difficult.

That is when the real hero stepped in, his little dog.

Air Zermatt, a helicopter rescue service, dispatched a crew with three specialists to begin the search. But even with aerial support, locating the small crevasse opening on the wide glacier surface was a serious challenge. Then, one of the rescue team members spotted a small but crucial clue: a tiny movement on a rock nearby.

It was the man’s chihuahua, sitting alert and completely still beside the opening of the crevasse.

Rescuers immediately moved in on the spot, and with the help of the dog’s unwavering presence, were able to find the exact point where the man had fallen. The hiker was safely pulled from the icy depths, and both he and his loyal dog were airlifted to a nearby hospital for care. An update on their condition has not been made public.

In a statement, Air Zermatt praised the dog’s role in the dramatic rescue.

“The little dog did not move during the entire operation and closely followed every movement of the rescue specialists. It is fair to say that his behavior contributed significantly to the successful rescue.”
