In a big win for wildlife, Cornwall has just opened a special bridge that helps animals safely cross a major road!
Nicknamed the “Badger Bridge,” this new wildlife crossing stretches nearly 150 feet long and 40 feet wide across a four-lane highway between Chiverton and Carland Cross. It’s part of a $375 million project to improve the A30 and protect local nature.

Built by National Highways and contractor Costain, the bridge isn’t just for badgers. It’s also designed for voles, birds, insects, and other small animals. Even walkers and horse riders will be able to enjoy this green space!
What Makes the Bridge Special?
- It’s only the third “green bridge” of its kind in the UK.
- Two hedgerows made of hawthorn, elder, and other native plants will run across it.
- It’s part of a plan that includes 33 wildlife crossing points in total.
- Over 87,000 trees are being planted as part of the wider project!
Andrew Alcorn, who helps manage the project, said:
“We’re really proud of the environmental work being done. This bridge will help wildlife travel safely and support the local ecosystem for years to come.”
Why It Matters
Green bridges were first built in France in the 1950s and became popular in the Netherlands in the 1990s. They help animals move around without getting hit by cars and also reconnect habitats that have been split by roads.
In the US, similar wildlife bridges help mountain lions and other animals cross highways safely — and now Cornwall is stepping up to do the same!
By the end of the year, thousands more trees will be planted to create a greener, safer future for otters, hedgehogs, bats, badgers, and more.
🌿 Nature and progress can go hand in hand, and Cornwall’s Badger Bridge proves it. 💚
