North Korea has launched the Wonsan-Kalma beach resort on its east coast, with Kim Jong Un calling it a key step toward growing tourism.
The resort, spanning 4 km, features hotels, restaurants, shops, and a water park. It opens to domestic tourists on July 1, though there’s no clear date for when foreigners will be allowed.

Kim attended the opening ceremony with his wife and daughter, alongside Russian diplomats. So far, only Russian tourists are expected, as most foreigners are still restricted.
Experts are unsure if the resort will appeal to international visitors. Some believe it’s a way for North Korea to earn revenue, while others say it’s unlikely to attract Western tourists.

North Korea’s government has called the opening a “great, auspicious event” and a “prelude to a new era” in tourism. Whether it truly opens doors to the world or remains mostly for locals and allies like Russia remains to be seen.
For now, Wonsan may serve more as a political symbol than a global destination.
